Readme for SOS for PocketGrandmaster 1.2 SOS is an amateur chess engine from the german programmer Rudolf Huber, who started chess programming in 1993. In the year 2000 SOS has won the microcomputer amateur world champion title in London. This engine is a successor of the London version. SOS uses a search algortihm called mtd(f). Because of this algorithm SOS updates the mainline and scores more frequently than other engines. You will often see that the score goes up (or down) several times by 0,01 points, while SOS is thinking about a move. During this process the mainline is updated too. The opening book of SOS is inside the engine, so it doesn´t matter which book is selected under the Pocketgrandmaster-GUI. The bookmode, which you can set under options, is important for the opening move selection of SOS. SOS has a lot of chess knowledge and plays a good positional game. It seems that SOS knows much about pawnstructures. Tactical SOS is also very strong. When the engine SOS is loaded, the title of the Pocketgrandmaster window will switch to "PGM: SOS 1.0". So you can see which engine is active. You can also find the information about the loaded engine in the About-Dialog.
